The NBA Playoffs Are Redefining the Future of Fan Engagement

As the 2026 NBA Playoffs dominate screens, streaming platforms and social conversations worldwide, the sports industry is witnessing a major shift: Fans now expect personalized, always-on experiences that extend far beyond the live game itself.

At NAB Show, the session “NBA League Pass: D2C Fan Engagement & The Future with AI” explored how the NBA has become a global benchmark for direct-to-consumer innovation. Central to that evolution is the league’s partnership with Evergent Technologies, which began in 2022 to help scale NBA League Pass internationally through advanced subscriber lifecycle management, cross-platform accessibility and personalization capabilities. The partnership recently deepened with a strategic NBA investment in Evergent, reinforcing a shared commitment to delivering tailored fan experiences worldwide.

“A lot of sports leagues and teams distributed their content through cable networks in the past, and now they have the opportunity to go direct to consumer,” said Evergent founder and CEO Vijay Sajja. “That’s enabling them to go global … live sports is different. It’s a digital stadium.”

But building that digital stadium on a global scale comes with growing complexity. NBA EVP of media operations and technology Ken DeGennaro pointed to the challenge of navigating region-by-region regulations, customer engagement requirements and evolving monetization models across international markets.

Thought Leadership.

Curtis LeGeyt, President and CEO of NAB, celebrates 80 years of the Broadcasting Engineering and IT (BEIT) Conference during the conference’s opening ceremony on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

NAB Show Is Where the Future of Media Policy Comes Into Focus

In Washington, we often debate the future of media in abstract terms. We talk about competition, innovation, public safety and the role of journalism. But at NAB Show, those dynamics are real and tangible.

It is where you see, in one place, how local television and radio stations are investing in the future while staying grounded in our mission to inform, protect and connect our communities. How content creators – from broadcast networks to major studios and individuals – are harnessing the power of new technologies. How Artificial Intelligence is being applied in real, practical ways across our industry, moving beyond theory into everyday use. And how media disruption is changing the way viewers access premier sporting events.

NAB Show will showcase the new technologies that will allow broadcasters to better connect with our audiences, build new partnerships and reimagine how we serve our communities in a rapidly changing media landscape. That includes new forms of digital engagement and collaboration with creators who are building audiences and expanding how content is produced and shared.

We will highlight the new tools that will enable the teams in our newsrooms and studios to work faster, surface insights and connect with audiences in more meaningful ways. At the same time, we will convene important conversations across our show floor and in session rooms about how these new technologies can enhance or undermine our trust and authenticity, areas where local broadcasters have long set the standard.

Our Sports Summit will explore what these changes mean for access, affordability and the shared experiences that bring communities together. Consumers want live sports on broadcast TV, and we must ensure the technology and level playing field to deliver it.

Our TV and Radio HQ will explore the new technologies that are the foundation for a modernized broadcast future with more resilient emergency communications, hyper-localized content and dynamic local journalism. We will highlight the innovations that are driving those enhanced features in the connected car and through the continued evolution, including the Broadcast Positioning System which will enable a novel nationwide backup to GPS.

There is also growing excitement around America 250. At NAB Show, station group and network leaders will share how they are telling our nation’s story through the voices of the communities they serve.

Throughout the week, broadcasters, content creators, producers, technologists and thought leaders will showcase the collaboration happening across the media landscape. We are building partnerships and preparing for what comes next. Because broadcasting is not just another business – it’s a public service, a lifeline, a trusted source of information and a cornerstone of our democracy.

What you see at NAB Show is an industry at an inflection point, but poised to embrace the new technologies that will ensure that our audiences continue to benefit from our unique services wherever, however and whenever they want to access them. These transformations must shape the policy debates we are having in Washington and across the country about the future of media, not the other way around.

The shift is reflected in attendance, with NAB Show reporting more than double the number of registered creators, influencers and podcasters this year, compared to 2025. NAB Show is where those changes come to life.

Here’s what we’re watching closely:

  • A four-day Sports Summit, now open to all, uniting leagues, broadcasters and tech leaders around rights, production and fan engagement.
  • A new enterprise track for Fortune 1000 companies building in-house studios and scaling video storytelling.
  • An expanded Creator Lab, reflecting the rise of creators as full-scale media businesses, with more sessions, activations and a dedicated networking space
  • A major push on AI and cloud, including two AI Pavilions and hundreds of exhibitors showcasing real-world applications across production, personalization and monetization

On the floor, expect a reimagined experience with new spaces, stronger networking opportunities and a fully upgraded convention center designed to help you move faster and connect smarter. To top it off, the new mobile app provides seamless opportunities to personalize your schedule and network with peers.

Come see it for yourself. This is where the future of media gets built.

Cloud Virtualization.

The Cloud-Native Newsroom Is No Longer Optional

Cloud virtualization is redefining how content is created, managed and delivered. By decoupling production from physical infrastructure, teams gain the flexibility to produce live content, collaborate remotely and scale resources dynamically. Whether it’s cloud switching for live events, virtual production pipelines or distributed post-production, the ability to operate without geographic constraints is now a competitive advantage.

Hybrid production is the new normal. Broadcasters are modernizing without abandoning legacy systems. Streaming platforms are optimizing delivery while managing costs. Enterprises are building secure, cloud-first content ecosystems. Across each use case, the focus is the same: Build the stack, not the stress.

Equally critical is interoperability. As tools and platforms multiply, seamless integration becomes the difference between efficiency and friction. Cloud-based environments simplify this complexity, enabling teams to focus on storytelling, not infrastructure.

The future newsroom isn’t defined by location. It’s defined by agility, scalability and resilience. And increasingly, it lives in the cloud.

Featured sessions and workshops include:

  • Hear from thought leaders Jamie Simmons with NBC, Joel Goldberg from CBS and VideoShip President Colin Grimes as they dive into how cloud-based products allow them to serve local newsrooms with efficiency and success and what the future will be.
  • In this session, explore how Alibaba Cloud Media Services integrates AI across the entire media pipeline, from content acquisition and production to processing, distribution and playback.
  • Join Rob Delf, CEO of Fabric, and Naima Elmasri, AWS Account Manager, Startups, for an exclusive fireside chat at NAB Show, where they break down the journey of migrating from their existing cloud provider to AWS.

Creator Economy.

What the Creator Economy is Starting to Look Like in 2026

Creators are rewriting the Hollywood playbook, but new pressures are emerging. Declining consumer spending has made brand deals less predictable, underscoring the need for revenue diversification. In response, creators are expanding beyond traditional partnerships to include:

  • Merchandise, memberships and subscriptions
  • Commerce, podcasting and live events
  • Community-first monetization models

At the same time, the pressure to constantly create is taking a toll. According to a 2025 Creator Economy Report, 78% of creators report burnout impacting their motivation and mental and physical health, fueling demand for creator-specific support services and more sustainable workflows.

Creators are also rethinking cross-platform strategies. While some push back on being “everywhere,” others are seeking better tools to manage content creation, formatting and audience engagement across platforms. AI is helping streamline these processes — but it’s also raising questions about authenticity, trust and compensation.

Here’s what creators are saying about what matters most:

“There’s thousands and thousands of content creators around the world. … What sets people apart is that they can build trust with their audience and create this relationship that feels authentic.”

– Zach Blank, Head of Content, Chef Nick DiGiovanni

“Creator burnout is so huge and it’s so inevitable. Creators need to rely on other people. While typically the creator economy is a solo entrepreneur type of role where it’s very self-isolating, you need that personability where you can interact with other peers, where you’re able to come up with ideas and collaborate with each other. That aspect of community amongst other creators is so important now.”

– Dylan Huey, CEO, Reach

“A lot of creators are going to start looking at physical spaces and different [sources] of revenue …ways that they can’t be replaced … to build community online and offline.”

– Shira Lazar, Founder and CEO, What’s Trending

Creators aren’t just influencers. They’re founders and media empires. As 2026 takes shape, one thing is clear: creators aren’t just adapting to the media landscape — they’re building what comes next. And at NAB Show, we believe it’s worth showing some extra love to the creators leading the way.

  • A larger theater and classroom for sessions on AI, creator techniques, business strategy and audience development
  • A new Networking Lounge designed for one-on-one meetings between creators and brands
  • A full slate of brand experiences showcasing the technologies and partnerships propelling the creator economy
Photo of Chirag Nijjer, Shira Lazar, Dylan Huey and Zach Blank
  • From brand deals and content strategy to equity partnerships and IP ownership, this panel dives into how top agencies and platforms are helping creators grow real businesses.
  • Sports content leaders share insights about what they want from potential collaborations with creators. Tune in as these executives discuss the prospective upshots of partnerships with creators, their most pressing audience needs and the challenges of crossing the divide between traditional and new media.
  • Sports creators from a variety of content focuses share their elevator pitches for prospective media partnerships. In a series of rapid-fire presentations, they lay out the social audiences and brand relationships they’ve built and what they’d bring to TV.

From Cost Center to Growth Engine: The New Role of Corporate Video

Enterprises are now expected to produce in-house video at a scale that would have been unimaginable a decade ago. In global organizations, video libraries can grow to hundreds of thousands of assets used for internal communications, training and customer engagement across multiple markets and languages.

In 2025, 89% of businesses were using video as a marketing tool, and even now, videos dominate the marketing industry in every format imaginable.

AI and cloud technologies are accelerating this shift. AI-assisted workflows are helping teams automate tasks such as captioning, translation, editing and content repurposing, reducing production timelines while allowing creative teams to focus on strategy and storytelling.

But scale introduces a new challenge: governance. As video production becomes more centralized across departments, organizations must balance speed with brand consistency, efficiency, security and compliance. This is especially true now that AI and cloud systems are embedded throughout the production pipeline, requiring clear policies and oversight to ensure content remains accurate, secure and aligned with corporate standards

Nevertheless, the result is a new operating model for corporate content: media-style production, powered by AI, governed by enterprise-grade workflows.

  • AI agents are beginning to open new ways for teams to manage, search, repurpose, and monetize their video content. In this session, Moments Lab CTO Fred Petitpont will share how agentic AI is starting to be applied in live broadcast environments as well as scripted and unscripted video discovery workflows.
  • Relocating, consolidating, or upgrading a broadcast facility is one of the most complex projects a media company can undertake. Hear from expert panelists as they share an executive-level roadmap for managing this massive undertaking, focusing on the strategic decision to move or modernize your facility.
  • As traditional revenue models are disrupted, the media and entertainment industry is embracing new pathways to profitability. This panel explores how OTT bundling, ad-supported FAST models, strategic partnerships, and premium content aggregation address audience fragmentation and deliver an all-in-one entertainment experience.
